One) 4tw is a great writing site for goal stuff Two) DO NOT SLAM EDITING AS YOU GO. It can really work!!! I do it some!!!! NO ADVICE IS PERFECTLY GENERALIZABLE!! It is not a bad habit!!!

NO UR RIGHT…..I KNOW…..i just have a distinct feeling editing as i go exacerbates my bad habits/inhibits my skills (eg inability to start doing a thing in stages rather than at once which -> not starting, depriving me of my v good ability to tweak and pinpoint things to hit a note Just Right )

garden-ghoul replied to your post: “8 writing questions and 2 extra meme”

wait what’s the correspondence between the moon phase and your tea choices

THERE IS NONE….my problem is that i take my tea diff every single time so no one can become familiar with it…..but actually upon more reflection my fave tea is proooooobably my mother’s chai, v strong, with cream and molasses, i have never been able to recreate it myself no matter how much she explains tho

Ambarussa!

i have to admit that i have far too many mutually exclusive ambarussa theories to have ever given it thought but sure 😉

and here I am being like “all elves and all peredhil are aspec I don’t make the rules”

jsdhfgsjhds i’m gonna say…..that would def be CONVENIENT for like, if you fell in love with someone but didn’t marry her for like 17 centuries, but it doesn’t tickle my sense of humor meanly enough

erotetica replied to your post: “relalted to your (excellent!) sex meme, do you headcanon any tolkien…”

I always thought lalwen tbh!

awww i’m actually weirdly captivated by the idea of direly-un-monogamous lalwen, responsible for several ‘wait how the fuck are YOU related to the house of finwe?’ vaguenesses that serve to sow confusion among historians, but i welcome all ppl’s suggestions

frodo and bilbo are both ace, imho. I’m also very attached to aro/ace boromir.

o yeah bilbo too would make sense. the whole idea in the UT that he had been subconsciously purposely refusing to entirely go respectable by marrying etc bc he knew on some level it was Not For Him…

“if you prefer to think of it this way” just, you know. on the
offchance one prefers to conceptualise the entirety of arda inmushroom
metaphors, as is right and proper o.O

of COURSE it’s the only right and proper way! it is the superior metaphor. anyway mushrooms are by far the most Legendarium-like life-form. Can anyone deny it?

“fate is a sea without shore”?

Sequence of vignettes of Eärendil very improbably surviving storms and fights and other deadly encounters on his voyages through absurdly unlikely and outlandish coincidences. He starts to suspect there’s some other force at work, making sure that he will be alive when his final unknowable doom claims him, like that shitpost about how briar rose is 100% invincible until she tries spinning on her 16th birthday. In between times he thinks about his parents. Is the uncertainty of their fate all that different from the uncertainty of his family’s and people’s, clinging to a little pocket of peace on the edge of Morgoth’s influence? Etc. Sometimes he also thinks about humanity, and his half-humanity. What lies in store for humans? Getting to know other humans for the first time was a little strange to him since even Tuor didn’t know a whole lot about humans, but in a good way. He feels guilty about how much he enjoys sailing even when he misses his sons and Elwing – he really kind of wants to see the edge of the world.

simaethae replied to your post:                   ok but what if Elves actually ascribe to…

isn’t there something that vaguely implies the Light of Aman is
inherited, wrt maeglin having dark eyes that are also somehow bright, or
something?

ohhh yeah that would make sense! i always sort of default-interpreted that bit about maeglin as like, eyes that are very shiny/stand out due to their shape and/or the contrast between the irises and whites or smth…but yeah! and like…..maybe descendants of amanyar have eye-light can be discerned but only if you are looking for it/scrutinize them closely, not something that’s immediately apparent?

no i was just. extremely struck by the clever exploitation of
consumer preferences and trade to military/political ends via miriel
blithely making shit up about how shrimp are sacred vessels of uinen’s
essence

“don’t eat them you don’t want maia stuck in your teeth”

the implied previous extensive numenorean shrimp industry

OH i thought maybe you were laughing about how i might have been sitting on this headcanon for weeks independent of your ask. (which no, i usually come up with fun stuff only when prompted). ANYWAY YEAH miriel only sitting around being miserable and unable to do anything is too unpleasant for me :||| need something good mixed in to that situation….

simaethae replied to your post:                   simaethae replied to your post:                  …

the faithful, in secret, eating prawn cocktails

omg. i did NOT think about that!!! 😀 😀 😀 i love it. ofc the faithful also wouldn’t always know for sure what miriel was making up and what was legit, so better follow it all anyway! just on principle.

☂ (food) for Miriel (either one!)?

I like to think one of the things Tar-Miriel WAS able to do while married to Ar-Pharazon was influence popular opinion fairly dramatically about stuff, because I think she was still pretty popular – hence why Pharazon didn’t say, find an excuse to execute her Henry VIII style some time after his rule was established. And also, I think, pre-Sauron+human-sacrificing stuff, people might have had an impression that various trumped up rumors about the ~dangerous secrets of the Faithful were all discovered now, because Miriel had seen the error of her father’s ways or something, and had snitched to Pharazon.

One of these things she influenced I hc was tanking Numenorean taste for shrimp, by spreading the idea that shrimp were Super Special prized creations of Uinen that contained her essence or some bullshit (*cue Miriel conspiracy-theorizing at various banquets about Inziladun’s ancient manuscripts and artwork a la Dan Brown over The Last Supper), and fuck Uinen right. Since Numenor had polluted their own coasts so badly no shrimp had been found there for a long time, they had long been in the habit of harvesting them from around the Gulf of Lhun. Once the Numenorean shrimp industry collapsed they pretty much abandoned the Lhun, which gave Lindon and Gil-galad considerably more breathing space to increase their own power on the sly – they had planned to use this to resist Numenor, but ofc it wound up pretty useful in the Last Alliance instead.

aaaaaa this is so good and multilayered, there is always SO MUCH going on in your fic

omg thank you guys!! it’s so v good to hear 🙂 they are tricky characters to write, since the canon characterization for them is either near-nonexistent, or near-completely untethered at the early end of the arc. tho i fear the main reason there’s always a lot of stuff going on in my fics is bc i’m too lazy to make them longer >_o

“made roast” sdvgfbhnjemwkwbehj i assumed quenya pronounced the vowels individually so i read maedhros as mah eh dros

I thought maedhros was just like a made-up sindarin namesmush….and that separate vowels in quenya were denoted by those ubiquitous ë and ä and etc

existentialposer replied to your post “crocordile replied to your post:                radiantanor replied to…”

Fun fact: Maedros was the latest version of the name Tolkien had. Christopher opted to use Maedhros for the published version for some reason, but canonically (depending on your definition) it could be Maedros.

YEAH that!! and in a sindarin ‘accent’/rules/whatever

simaethae replied to your post “crocordile replied to your post:                radiantanor replied to…”

aredhel is the hardest name, sorry, it always reads to me as ah-red-hel and then i trip over myself and turn the th into a v, as you do :/

i can see that….some other dh words read like that to me too

simaethae replied to your post “existentialposer replied to your post:                 crocordile…”

i think “ai” in quenya and “ae” in sindarin are both pronounced like “eye”?? idk tho!

!!!!!!

???

MY LIFE IS A LIE

thelioninmybed replied to your post: existentialposer replied to your post:           …

I think Simaethae is right about the ae being eye (though I do not and will never pronounce it that way, may sounds better okay)

i speak american-accented sindarin this is my excuse. tolkien would respect it.
