wow
I’m actually so mad rn…. ur right to have salt abt ppl who think the
late numenorians we’re somehow morally grey, but it seems like the OTHER
opinion I see (and the one I think tolkein maybe had???) is “well they
should have just accepted the mortality they were forced into without
consent gracefully.” which. Hmmm. No.

yeah this false
dichotomy was the MOST ANNOYING thing when i first read it, but then as i
started reading more and more numenor content in like the UT and stuff,
it became one of my FAVORITE things as like, a feature of
the-akallabeth-as-in-universe-document. especially in that like, i doubt it’s like, precisely the one tolkien had in mind…ish? or like it probably is the one he had in mind but i don’t think exactly due to the same train of reasoning as the akallabeth’s. from all the
other writings, the numenoreans’ colonialism and
imperialism stuff started well before their beef with mortality or convo
with the valar, and the whole
becoming-shitty-bc-entitled-assholes arc is separate from and not
caused by their becoming-dissatisfied-with-mortality arc (although each arc of course influence how they respond to the other arc a
lot). the silm akallabeth is so very heavily uh…..in hindsight? an
attempt by the in-universe characters to retroactively explain the
decline of numenor in a way that they can grasp and which brings them
some comfort etc (bc gondor and arnor obviously do not at all stop with
the racial superiority etc)

simaethae replied to your post: “You asked for asks, so I’ll ask something that I would like someone…”

uh, tho, actually i am always delighted to talk people’s ear off about my opinions so that’s probably an unwarrantedly negative take. if someone asked me “why do you enjoy that trash” i’d prob just be flattered they cared about my opinions lol

me too lollllll i have 39475 Opinions, please tell me which one is bugging you so i can show you how thoughtful about my reasons and/or how unstupidly self-aware of its subjectivity i am sdifjdskfds. this is also why i’m always better with writing meta in response to asks or memes because i get the sense of like, ‘oh! someone wants to know my Opinions in this area! *preens*’ whereas i feel vaguely obligated to put a bit more effort/setup into original meta lol

counterpoint: people who do that to Celebrimbor are Wrong

IT’S TRUE I WAS USING HIM AS A BAROMETER OF WRONG. as in, the celebrimbor ones are Wrong in terms of bad taste and bad analysis of canon and context. these ones also have the additional wrongness of being wrong in terms of ‘not parsing the chapterful of dialogue’

I too have read a lotttttt of sad books and yet i’m…..slowly approaching the O.o conclusion that….the saddest book i have ever read in terms of imprinted reaction is……harry potter and the order of the phoenix…….?

at least amusing, and then turns into “what if LotR were a WW2 spy
novel” in like, the least interesting possible ways 😦

hhhhhhh amusing is better than some things…..i mean at least this seems to just be LOL ALIGNMENT SWAP I’M A GENIUS not like…..‘what if victims of persecution were actually lying to get rich/powerful’……which sets off screaming alarm bells

IKR i was vaguely thinking like…..galadriel and celeborn as both being super smitten with their teacher, a little competitive with but also very in sync with each other, melian kind of laughing internally while directing things….

simaethae replied to your post: “rose-of-the-bright-sea replied to your post:                  …”

i normally go with the servants option as headcanon bc i cannot believe if galadriel and celeborn had been around in sirion it would have gone unmentioned, but yes good

YEAH it’s true i mean….i do totally believe something that big could go unmentioned, but i also think the presence of galadriel and celeborn would impact the whole dynamic in sirion sooooooo much, and ehhhh…

simultaneously the best thing to have ever happened to him

YEAH YEAH 2-cornered Chicken-Threesomes are the worst/best. Galadriel doing the sex equivalent of the preteen boy ‘i dare you to touch your tongue to this frozen flagpole’ thing, annatar outdoing and/or sabotaging her undertakings, and celebrimbor getting all the biproduct-benefits of the competition. i guess at some point the galadriel-annatar corners of the triangle also come into contact but, haven’t figured that out yet…

i want someone to write uncomfortable galadriel/celebrimbor/annatar what about MY base desires c’mon

like, which scenario….galadriel and annatar subtly competing to outdo the other one re: celebrimbor to the point of pushing the other out of the threesome, while communicating entirely through sideeyes and lip curls, while celebrimbor thinks they’re fighting about something completely off-base but also pretends he doesn’t notice

I wonder what Gilraen told bby Estel about why they lived in Rivendell? He must have asked her at some point

I figure that it wasn’t just the heirs of isildur who lived in rivendell (that would make no sense imo because then rivendell would be the WORST place to hide a dunedain mother and child, anyone could put 2 and 2 together), but various other kids/families as well who had a need to get refuge somewhere, or who wanted to study history/medicine/other stuff, or maybe just totally trivial reasons, off and on, and gilraen told him they moved there because bad guys killed his dad and wanted to kill his dad’s family too…like a partial truth thing

lmao if you want!! but i love ittttt…i love those weird epic hero and mythology tropes….it fits aragorn so well

simaethae replied to your post: “ships: beren/luthien? luthien/death? i forget what you actually ship…”

ohhh… this is really making me think about how, like, enclosed their post-rebirth narrative is – they walk away from everything, their world narrows to each other and the green forest around them….like, choosing mortality lets them just walk away out of the story? hmmm

ooooh yeah kinda! i remember vaguely that one of tolkien’s biggest self-criticisms was that he didn’t make gandalf coming back into a big enough change or smth…that coming back to life is fine, but that making death something that didn’t make a difference was cheating? their coming back to life is much more of a transformation than an undoing or a return….

crocordile replied to your post: “Have you ever cried with books, Andie? How about movies?”

Nothing in particular prompted this i was just curious! And damnn I’m kind of the same tho! I never cried reading the silm or asoiaf for example, but i cried afterwards listening to fanmixes that made me relive particular scenes/emotions…. I wonder if it’s a form of emotional appropriation hahaha

yeah idk what it is! it’s not like i don’t feel as strongly while reading or watching, but it’s like…..as if it’s happening on some different section of my brain

ships: beren/luthien? luthien/death? i forget what you actually ship ^_^;;

  • when of if I started shipping it: when i was 10 years old and read LOTR for the first time – the song of Tinuviel that aragorn sings in “A Knife in the Dark” <3333
  • my thoughts: THEY’RE GOOD. They make way more sense than people dismiss them as. The instantly-falling-in-love thing is great and a key part of my love for them. (One moment stood she, and a spell/His voice laid on her; Beren came/And doom fell on Tinuviel….) The choices of language and repeated exact terms and words and use of exact imagery and metaphor in the Lay of Leithian and in Of Beren and Luthien, regarding love, emotion, despair, beauty, the juxtaposition of the most horrific and most blissful – both of them forms of the same sort of enchantment, the state of the human mind— the spontaneous eucatastrophic turns of the narrative, are like a bottomless pit. also they anchor – ligament or tendon style – so many central concepts of the legendarium as a whole, tho especially LOTR. Meanwhile, the Tale of Tinuviel is an endearing humanized delight.
  • What makes me happy about them: EVERYTHING
  • What makes me sad about them: The post-Thingol’s-murder stage of their lives….its one of the most harsh, imo, depictions of the arda marred concept
  • things done in fanfic that annoys me: I don’t really read any fic of them!
  • things I look for in fanfic: I’m gonna fucking write it myself tbh. but i would hypothetically look most for very strictly limited POV.
  • My kinks: elf hair, body hair, MAGIC GROWING HAIR. Super spontaneous early-relationship hushed wordless sex that’s super uncomfortable due to roots, pinecones, etc. sex while bathing in pools, the river, etc. dorky reenactments of their first meeting. BOTH OF THEM BEING PHYSICALLY OLD….
  • Who I’d be comfortable them ending up with, if not each other: DEATH. maybe Miriel.
  • My happily ever after for them: Uh, I like the idea that in Arda Remade they find each other a la their raising from the dead in some reality-bent sort of interpretation of the term ‘meeting.’ “And long ago they passed away/ In the forest singing sorrowless”see this post.
