five years from now it’s a leithian meme.

it is already a meme IN MY HEART.

katha batina lokhi, from “if one could walk at the floor on the bottom of the sea” to “tasting salt like blood” (sorry it’s a little over)?

Thank you! This was way too long but you are a special nub. link for reference!

-I love the ocean being, in these people’s conception of reality, nothing really to do with what the ocean ‘is’ from a modern perspective, they have no concept of that at all and the thing is that there’s no objective truth outside their perspective as far as this universe goes, it’s turtles all the way down. what it means to them. what it has always meant to them is the ocean is endless, and is endlessness itself. it has no edge and this is the taken-for-granted way to the divine, to the valar, to the halls of mandos, etc. now that the seas are bounded the only way they can wrap their minds around the idea is that now the sea must be somehow bottomless, the limits of human imagination are clunky — uhhhh maybe it’s a door? maybe there’s a path? to the….whatever that must be down under now? OR SOMETHING? it’s mostly just the “????” part of gogol’s wootton major post.

-uncannily still clear bright silent moonlit night as a liminal space or time. the numenoreans probably navigated by echolocation quite a lot, given their brand of low key magic and sea-attunedness, and vague tech in the last days. if you listen hard enough the nameless whatever that you have lost might manifest itself by the pattern of sounds. somehow, right? the standard for ‘this is ridiculous and makes no sense’ is pretty undefined when the world has knotted into something unimaginable.

-I know we can find it by math! apparently math still works. so if elves can sail off the curve maybe there’s some sort of solution for us along those lines.

– hey btw what exactly is the ‘it’ we are trying to find? it’s vaguely ‘some trace of numenor’ and what does that mean? pieces of the island of elenna? the path through which it was lost? the place it used to be? evidence it existed? the world that was Before? the time Before? we’ve already lost this. it’s ours.

-i am vaguely haunted by anarion, who we know little of. it’s cool how rumors start, with ‘this is the entirely subjective thing I personally saw’ to other ppl generating a whole bunch of theories around it and ways to fix it.

-after azruben dives — again the sense that what the world ‘is’ is more about what it seems from each person’s perspective. ‘the world feels not-round’ is just the closest conscious approximation he can grasp.

-I am not ruining what he sees. but like…. the mirrormere, and the dead marshes, and earendil snagged in a glass, and lothlorien. eregion. the land remembers, the water remembers. or is it shows, like the straight road? well azruben sure doesn’t know.

-he sees the arrival of the edain, foam flying before the ships beneath earendil….I can’t write anything that isn’t pinioned to some lotr thing – faramir had his dreams of the great wave that sank numenor, thousands of years after, as did Sam for a moment at the ring’s destruction.

-salt like blood: again with the your mind makes things real

a story about their family/home life

“With so nimble a mind, Estel, there is little doubt that you shall win great favor by picking gifts as apt as this one for your future allies. It has been long since I have seen the bright berries and dark leaves of Eregion, the Land of Holly. I had heard they had nearly died out in that land, fading, like many things.

Will I remember? They were my daughter’s delight, in her childhood when the first stones of Ost-in-Edhil were laid amid our cottages in the wilds before the gate of Khazad-dum of old. She loved them because they were bright even in the dark of winter, and under the snow. Fitting, for her! But no doubt you have heard many a tale of her in your old home. But I remember clearest when she was still mine. My husband and I do not sit remembering often, now. Happy! Too happy and too busy to dwell unduly upon what was lost to me, my brothers, my cousins, my teacher. Each day different from the last, each day my lord and I began a new work, each day the stones of our towers reached higher, each day our daughter brought us some new pleasure of parenthood that we could not have imagined, and our family and home and people grew together all at once. Do you know what delight it is to build a home of your own? Perhaps you shall, in the north kingdom: my granddaughter must know it in her span of time.

Time! Time was different then. How fast did my daughter grow! How fast our city! Our works, and our arts! How busy was my family! Curious – things changed so much, so fast that the time never dragged, yet never did it slip by unnoticed as it does now. So much was done that the time seemed much more full than it seems now, yet it weighed one down so little. Curious – that the holly remains little changed all the year, yet in my memory never does it seem to stand so still as the falling golden leaves.”

“cut ten to one” and “reflections” were the first two fics I wrote
for the Silm fandom and still among the most-kudosed. there’s a lot of
headcanon and even a little bit of Discourse stuff that I don’t stand by
anymore in them, so they’re kind of just “weird larval stuff that
doesn’t 100% reflect my relationship with this part of the canon
anymore” (and yet there are still parts of them that I’ve resurrected
and reworked for use in my current WIP)

oh man tbh this weird paranoia is why i never write fic until i’ve been in a fandom for a good while, i’m always afraid my opinions will change too substiantially. as if that’s unforgivable or smth.

  •    It’s for the sake of prisoners and I don’t disagree with anything
necessarily, it’s just super rough and full of dropped threads – it
suffers from my having written it as I was posting it. And also changing
my mind about whether it was going to be shippy half way through (it
was the RIGHT choice but one I should’ve made before I started)

  • I GET THAT FEELING. but i do stand by the opinion that this is a problem that’s way more forgivable in fanfic than in original fic!

  •    i was rereading one of my most popular fics the other day and having
the horrible revelation that i probably do overuse italics and some of
my sentences are too long, but also, i was unable to come up with
anything i’d actually change? MEH. (tho i still liked it, i don’t wanna
    give the wrong impression, just.)

lol!!! basically every fic i write is overpopulated with adverbs and i’m like, you know what, i’m not gonna bother making the effort to fix this for fanfic, i like adverbs.
