I’m also just an eavesdropper but I want to say your thoughts on the
Chronicles of Narnia match mine almost exactly. I love those books to
bits and still get swept along into their world when I re-read them, but
even when I read them for the first time as an 11-year-old I felt there
were lots of problems with them. The religious allegories were deeply
unsatisfying at times, and Susan’s fate at the end of The Last Battle
enraged me.
Lmao Susan yup.
“Unsatisfying” is a great way to put it! I think, unsatisfying, and also not even very interesting in their unsatisfyingness – like they feel complete and their completeness is bleh or sort of squashed, rather than feeling unsatisfying due to feeling incomplete or unreliable and therefore question-stimulating.

okay the horse and his boy is definitely my favorite but which book
has the first-most racist cringey bullshit? are you thinking of the tash
stuff in last battle?
yeah. like, I guess the negative depiction of the culture etc is bad enough, but IMO the explicit analysis in The Last Battle is worse? And there’s no…like, “this is how it looks from X character’s perspective” sort of possible in-universe framing in the Last Battle either, really. >_<
