1-3 things I enjoy about them
–EVERYTHING I mean, I feel like it’s too obvious to say I love how genuinely and believably noble and good-hearted and stuff he is (and gets the pagetime to really show it), so more specifically, I love the contrasts when he seems very stern but is very nuanced and thoughtful in his actions
-His outbursts of, foresight and lyricism every now and then, and also just, the way he talks in general! I just really like his dialogue and his voice, it’s just very appealing
-How the aforementioned nobility and kindness seems to have a lot of choice involved, rather than just how he intractably is – he’s clearly able to be really mean (re: his ‘do you wish Boromir was alive instead’ remark to Denethor) but 99% of the time he isn’t
Something interesting about them based on tenuous circumstantial evidence
Okay I’m guilty of having joked about this before when I didn’t realize it, but it turns out actually the name “Faramir” is quenya and doesn’t mean “sufficient jewel” in the lame-o sense of “sufficient.” But also, due to phonetic similarities of the root words, it actually more likely means “jewel of the seashore” which means his name was probably picked either by Finduilas or with her side of the family in mind
A question I have about them
Exactly how far does that foresight reach anyway? It’s clearly very strong, but how strong? How many things can he do with it?
A random relevant line I like
For myself,’ said Faramir, ‘I would see the White Tree in flower again in
the courts of the kings, and the Silver Crown return, and Minas Tirith in peace:
Minas Anor again as of old, full of light, high and fair, beautiful as a queen
among other queens: not a mistress of many slaves, nay, not even a kind mistress
of willing slaves.
My preferred version, if there is more than one version of their story (or part of their story)
Uh, is there any in like, the Peoples of Middle Earth? I can’t remember if there is, that volume is so packed and I skimmed over a good bit of it.
Favorite relationship(s)
Boromir, Denethor, Aragorn, Eowyn…hypothetically Finduilas. Pippin too, but not enough pagetime there to insist on it. (Also hypothetically: FARAMIR TOOK??? DID HE EVER MEET HIM. I WANT TO SAY HE MUST HAVE??)
How would they react to Tom Bombadil
Omg he would be so curious about him and probably ask a bunch of questions but like, in a polite way
Optional: Something about them that I think people forget
…I think the most frequent mischaracterization of him I see is of him being portrayed as like, shy and insecure, which is ehhhhh???? I mean, people do rightly complain about his movie characterization but they usually only focus on the bit where he captures Frodo and Sam and Gollum, which they’re right, that part is ooc, but then a lot of those same people tend to write him like the rest of his portrayal is true to the book which is, no, and – actually you know what just read anghraine’s excellent essay on the subject.
