RAICES Bond Fund: FREE our Families

catchaspark:

HI ALL. Perhaps like me you feel hopeless in the face of the unendurable devastation being visited upon asylum-seeking families in the United States right now! I know I do!

I wanted to boost this link because this is one of the easiest and most concrete ways to help people at the border: families who are free from detention are families with many, many more options. Donating to a bond fund allows the organizations in immediate contact with those families to get them the money they need to get out.

There are other ways you can help immigrants in the United States at risk of deportation but here are some for specific skillsets:

As a lawyer– I just signed up to do remote work at immigrationjustice.us, but you can also do a week at Dilley if your firm will permit.

As an interpreter– Here’s a site connecting translators/interpreters with volunteer opportunities by state and national options.

As a US citizen who is available during business hours to do things– Immigration accompaniment is the term to search for. You can sign up to help people go to ICE checkins, court dates, or other sensitive locations through local organizations. As one example, here is RAICES’ page on how to do this near San Antonio.

As a person of faith– Find your local sanctuary coalition and get your church/synagogue/mosque enrolled, and/or read up on their suggested ways to help. For example, here’s the NorCal list of action items.

As a person available to provide space to another for several months– You may be able to sponsor a detainee and get them released to stay in your home for the short-term. Contact your local immigrants’ rights organization to find out how.
