Rían of the House of Bëor

By hard fate was she born into such days, for she was gentle of heart and loved neither hunting nor war. Her love was given to trees and to the flowers of the wild, and she was a singer and a maker of songs.

To readers of Tolkien’s works, Rían is a minor character known primarily for her relationships to others: cousin of Morwen, wife of Huor, mother of Tuor. The lines quoted, along with the variations of her death scene, provide the only substantive descriptions of Rían’s character. But if we were only going to get a few details, I’m glad we have this one: of the handful of named composers in the legendarium, one of them is a mortal woman. Perhaps Arda remembered Rían for more than just her place on a family tree.
