it’s unfortunately hard to describe without examples, but when someone says “hey what if _____ thing that Literally Happened On-page In Canon didn’t actually happen like that/was made up, because the in-universe document was erroneous because _____”

which can be really funny, or incredibly fascinating and cool (eg, gogol’s dirhavel fics), especially when it’s about a bit of canon that IS super weird/nonsensical/unwitnessed. But sometimes it’s just really transparently someone taking a potshot at a character they don’t like/at an inconvenient event, and it’s just a very ‘know it when you see it’ sort of thing…..? idk
