I had seen that pic of ur cute smiles before , but not that beautiful dog! :O

she was the most beautiful dog! she was an extraordinarily stubborn sheltie who whenever we took her to the beach, would run up and down its length importantly barking at the waves convinced that her Mad Herding Dog Skillz was the only thing keeping the waves from flooding out indefinitely, and would often affect a snooty unconcerned air apparently to try to make us thing she wasn’t interested even though she was wagging her tail really hard, and would sneeze like 15 times in a row when she got rly excited…..she was Good…. 😦

Ain’t that the truth; it’s like trying to run a functioning government after years of misrule. The whole bureaucracy is messed up; there are whole departments that haven’t even gotten the memo.

forcing nienor to get in ONE MORE BURN *between* her cool signoff and
death

and because she’s a child of hurin it’s just a self-drag with a blast radius

neither did she forget. it’s fine it’s fine it’s great

THE WORST!! everything is the worst! i am doomed and the world is doomed and the world is me and is fucking up my shit from the inside out and vice versa and everything is fail. this is fine!!!!!11

   I want the au where they are happy and lalaith still lived my poor babies they didn’t deserve what happened to them  ;_;

real talk I am not smart enough to do a thing about the Doom of the children of hurin like thelioninmybed did unraveling all ‘what if’ aus to wriggle out of the Doom of the noldor, so I’m just. why not. this makes everything work out feasibly-fine bc Hurin never razzes Thingol with the nauglamir and the girdle never falls and so there’s a nice strong safe stable un-kinslayed population to step on the Feanorians if/when they make a fuss, and put their heads together and send Earendil to the valar and escape the war of wrath with less drawn-out pre-mortem awfulness. And Hurin’s kids wouldn’t care anyway cuz that’s the good thing about dying in like 80 years.

linguisticparadox replied to your post:                  Top 3 tolkien characters. Choose, I dare you.

Frodo is superior to every character and I love him

I’m super biased towards protagonists becoming my favorite character in all books I read tbh (cough Harry Potter cough), but Frodo is a REALLY satisfying one!

erotetica replied to your post:                  ok um top three doriathrim?

I think of elwing the same way lol

Yeah idk, it’s a tricky identity thing…like, top 3 of the characters who are presented as concrete examples of the doriathrim, or top 3 characters, period, out of those who happen to qualify as doriathrim? i mean elwing is a really good example of one of the doriath survivors but…

‘veiled soon-to-be-ex-catholic hysteria’ is SUCH a LOOK

Real talk: practical theodicy is the most … fascinating thing in a world where the metaphysical questions about souls and afterlives and whether or not god and angels etc exist and what they are like, 90% directly answerable. The faith aspect is pushed like, waaaaaaay back to this tiny sliver of content covering ‘why does it happen THIS way for US and THIS way for YOU’ and ‘but what about the far future tho’ and ‘okay but like, OUTSIDE the universe there’s…?’ and things, because most of the rest of it is just, confirmed in-universe fact! Cut out the middleman, just expose the important non-semantics! it’s really great. also: “And for that reason I said that if your tale is true, then all in Arda
is vain, from the pinnacle of Oiolossë to the uttermost abyss.”

Finrod…. :((((((

also andie sorry for clarifying at your clarifications endlessly but

I was gonna be mad until you amended it to “beloved twit” bc I love Finrod with all my heart and soul

sjhdfbsd YES an important distinction (finrod = literally my favorite silm elf…technically I sooooort of sliiiiightly love galadriel and elrond more, but only in lotr not in the silm, i don’t really consider them silm characters, and silm and lotr characters are apples to oranges for me)

actualmermaid replied to your post:                   crocordile replied to your post:                  …

I am so much of a Feanorian fan that I went and had their symbol
tattooed on my body but in what universe are they textual underdogs,
like. really. they have the best stuff in the book but making them 100%
sympathetic and always justified in everything they do robs them of most
of what makes them compelling in the first place

It’s like, the Godfather if the Corleones really were a respectable olive oil business or smth. idk. that’s a dumb example. but just yeah, 100% this.

kareenvorbarra replied to your post:                   crocordile replied to your post:                  …

“the narrative is biased against the feanorians” discourse is still
one of the most puzzling things i’ve ever seen in this fandom

I
just have to sit down and chinhands sometimes. Like. Do you know the
sheer number of characters I would kill to have half as much juicy in-text
character-clarification and focus and description and nuance and dialogue and
filled-in timeline details as the Feanorians….(I mean, I GUESS Finrod
technically gets several times more dialogue than any other Finwean
except maybe Galadriel (in lotr), but still…? that’s, a philosophy debate? whereas the whole narrative is
focused around the Feanorians’ tragedy – yes, all about tragic flaws and self-destructiveness etc of course, but it’s still written/presented as MUCH more similar to…Turin rather than Sauron, for example)

psychopompious replied to your post:                   actualmermaid replied to your post:               …

also seeing as I adore the Arafinwions, maybe I’ve finally found the
answer to why I can’t write any of the Feanorions to save my life (with
the lone exception of Celegorm, but does he really count)

djhfsjf
you know Celegorm IS kind of a weird standout one isn’t he? I wonder
what it is about him…I was always very taken with his hippie
animal-talking Orome fanboying nature guy aesthetic + psycho murderer
who just like stands up and yells about shit to rile people up and just
grabs ppl he thinks are hot bc he wants them and like, yells curses at
his horse and dog when they don’t obey him like idk he’s fantastic man,
and v different from most evil tolkien characters….tolkien is really
into the sneaking/scheming sweet-voiced hidden villainy thing and Celegorm is, so not
that

gurguliare replied to your post:               🔥 thingol 🔥

i legit think there must be a terrifying element to beren having
*passed through the girdle*, plus as you say elf ignorance/paranoia
about human capabilities is this really … weird, hilarious, tragic stew…
“ARE THEY COMING TO USURP US?” well, technically but don’t worry, you
usurp yourselves first. “melian overrode thingol’s will” stuff sets my
teeth on edge a bit, but i actually kind of … i’m interested in what
happens to this scenario if the second “if” is no?

like if he doesn’t or can’t acknowledge anything about this as it
applies to him personally and then there’s this fucking eruption with
his daughter, lmao. or like–say if he wasn’t brainwashed but he still
/awoke/ to terror, less of melian than of the kind of selfish love that
lets you ditch an entire people. and like… i feel like that fear of
luthien just *disappearing*, the way he did, must also…

Yeah I don’t like, necessarily agree with the Melian overriding his will scenario either (I don’t…100% disagree with the possibility, exactly? BUT I like my stuff more ambiguous and complex and my ideal version of that scenario is to interpret it more like ‘natural love – but super-enhanced effects because MAIA and, exactly where is the totally firm bright line that separates free will from enchantment in that sort of scenario, involving those kinds of powers, which influence the entire course of history so hard’). Like, I think there’s a number of different ways that scenario can be full of Issues, not just a leap to a straight ‘oh she was controlling him.’

But also yeah you’re right that actually if he didn’t ever acknowledge or come to terms with that whole thing, that might actually work to this scenario even better! If it’s like, subconscious repressed issues that he has never looked at, and they come erupting out sideways when exposed to a strong enough catalyst. Which, in that case, wouldn’t even require Melian’s enchantment thing to be all that side-eye anyway…if Thingol and Melian’s similarity to Beren and Luthien is actually even stronger than it seems, but B&L are more honest with themselves about it…

Anyway yeah I really do like the idea of Thingol thinking/fearing Luthien might pull a HIM.

siadea replied to your post:                 🔥 thingol 🔥

This has been my interpretation ever since I read the Lay! I’m not
even sure the sketch level of Melian is relevant, because it COULD have
been, and he’s not stupid enough to be ignorant of it. Combine with “I’d
rather have my daughter safe than her be under any Epic Fate” and
“that’s exactly what someone under an enchantment would say” and… we’ll
wait 90 years or so and everything will be fine again, Beren will be
dead of old age, etc.

He can go do his Epic Fate shit WITHOUT HER, as it were.

Yeah you’re definitely right that he could have been thinking of what COULD have happened, not just something that did happen. Plus I’m sure there were plenty more actually malicious creepy mind-controlly enchantment-y things or people still milling around in this time period and in Thingol’s, sphere of awareness? I mean, there was definitely Eol in Nan Elmoth…

linguisticparadox replied to your post:                🔥 thingol 🔥

I need to actually read the Lay…I’m assuming that’s from BoLT and stuff?

It’s from HoME volume 3, the Lays of Beleriand, but there’s online sources too!
