i’m kinda surprised catch-22 is up there. it was a fave of my as a teen and i’m hilariously unacademic
tbh i can definitely see how the giant cast and the non-linear narrative could make it really hard to power through, especially if reading at a gradual pace. LOTR’s presence on these sorts of lists on the other hand totally bewilders me
ohhhhhh that does make sense! I’m a huge fan of both of those things so I never considered how they could act as a barrier
(for lotr I think people bring certain expectations to it that hinder them. two big ones I’ve noticed are people who assume the book will dive into the main quest immediately and are turned off by all of the build up in the shire, and people who feel pressured to remember every single name and description because they’ve heard that tolkien ties everything together and they end up so afraid of missing something important they lose the forest in the trees)
